Fun fact: Towards the end of his career, Honoré de Balzac became enchanted with the future hotel, and in 1846 he acquired the property to give to Countess Ewelina Hanska, whom he married in May 1850. He spent his last days in the house and died without ever having paid the purchase price.

One of the first hotels to be erected in the now sought after southern coast of Portugal, Hotel Dona Filipa underwent extensive renovations bringing it firmly into the 21st Century, while retaining all of the charm and features which give the property its original Portuguese flair and flavour – tiles, terracotta and earthly tones of taupe and azure which complement the surrounding natural elements – sea, golf and pine woods.
